Once you step off at the top station of the Costabella chairlift, you will find yourself in an area rich in panoramic trails and historic stops. The zone offers trekking and walks for all ages and skill levels: easy strolls for families, intermediate hikes, as well as expert excursions and via ferratas.
Among the simple walks for families, a must-mention is the CAI trail No. 604, which leads to the Passo delle Selle Refuge (2,530 m). This oasis of peace among the mountains offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding Dolomites: the Costabella Ridge in the foreground, Cima Bocche, Cima Juribrutto, the majestic Pale di San Martino, Mount Civetta, and Mount Pelmo to the east, as well as the entire Monzoni Group, the Catinaccio Group, and the scree slopes of Val San Nicolò to the west. The walk takes about 45-60 minutes with an elevation gain of 250 meters. The refuge stands on the mountain pass that divides the green meadows of the San Pellegrino area from the wild Monzoni Valley.
Just a very short distance from the top station is Baita Paradiso, a mountain hut renowned for its traditional Ladin cuisine and rich gastronomic offerings. This walk is also ideal for families, as well as for anyone looking for a relaxing break without too much effort.
There are also intermediate routes, such as the Colifòn Historical Itinerary, dedicated to the Great War and lasting about 2.5 to 3 hours, and the descent into Val Monzoni from the Passo delle Selle. The Colifòn Historical Itinerary allows you to reach the old military shelters and the gun emplacements of Sas dal Musc at an altitude of 2,223 meters (the use of a flashlight is required to explore the tunnels). Meanwhile, the descent into Val Monzoni involves a hike on the opposite slope of Passo delle Selle, following trail No. 603, which leads down to Malga Monzoni and the village of Pozza di Fassa.
For hikers seeking adventure, the area also offers the opportunity to trek the Alta Via Bepi Zac, crossing through the battlefields of the Great War. This famous equipped trail (a medium-difficulty via ferrata) winds from the Passo delle Selle Refuge along the ridges of Costabella. The itinerary is a true open-air museum, filled with trenches, walkways, military outposts, and tunnels dug by the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies during World War I. For more advanced hikers, there is also the option to climb up to Cima Campagnacia, following a medium-to-difficult variation that detours from the first section of the Bepi Zac. This second alternative allows you to reach the panoramic 2,737-meter summit in about 2 hours from the top station of the lift.
Finally, there is the Alta Via Bruno Federspiel, another highly demanding and airy equipped route that develops along the nearby Monzoni ridge, strictly reserved for experienced hikers with via ferrata gear.
